Case Study 17 – 2 Porsches from the Netherlands

We were recently asked to arrange the import of two Porsches from the Netherlands—a 911 convertible and a Macan. Both were imported with taxes, which added up to well over 12.000 euros. Dutch cars also benefit from a BPM refund, which is the Dutch equivalent of ISV. The Dutch tax-return that was almost as high as the ISV.  So this was a great opportunity to bring the cars to Portugal.

Extra Fast Processing

Because the customer was importing two cars, we were able to offer the “extra fast” service. This was possible because the customer had carefully prepared all the necessary documents in advance.

Not all cars qualify for this fast-track process, but when everything is 100% in order, we can sometimes speed up the import significantly.

Inspection

Both cars were already in Portugal, so scheduling the inspection was quick and easy. Since they were relatively new and in great condition, the process went smoothly with no unexpected issues.

Separate ISV Payment

Since the ISV tax was quite high, the customer chose to pay the tax directly to the authorities. Normally, we handle this process, but in this case, the customer preferred to manage it personally.

While this option is available, it does come with a small downside. Self-payment requires extra effort and slightly delays the process—usually by a few days—as the payment takes longer to process through the system. The Portuguese tax system isn’t always the fastest, but this time, everything went through quickly without issues.

Key Takeaways

• The “extra fast” option is possible when all the paperwork is 100% perfect. If you need a speedy import, talk to us—we’ll see what we can do.
• Separate ISV payment is possible, especially for large amounts, but we generally don’t recommend it for normal cases since it slows down the process slightly.
• Even with high ISV taxes, importing may still be worth it. It depends on car prices in Portugal. In the Netherlands, you may also get a BPM refund, making the deal more attractive.
