What Is the IMT Fee?
When importing a car from outside the EU, you are required to register the vehicle with IMT. As part of this process, IMT charges a registration fee of €165, officially known as:
Taxa de Registo de Veículo no IMT para Veículos Importados de Países Terceiros
This is the standard fee applied to vehicles coming from third countries (non-EU).
What does this fee cover?
- Processing and registration of vehicle data
- Verification of documents for non-EU imports
- Administrative handling of third-country imports, which are typically more complex
EU vs. Non-EU Fee Difference
For EU vehicles, this fee is not necessary. The fee reflects the additional work involved in processing and approving vehicles without EU type-approval (homologation).
