In Portugal, IMT stands for two things. One is the property tax (Imposto Municipal sobre as Transmissões Onerosas de Imóveis), but what we’re focused on is the Institute of Mobility and Transport (Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes).
What we need IMT for
During the import and registration process we need IMT for thow things:
- The homologation consultation
- IMT registration
Typically the registration costs the following:
- Vehicle approved in the EU: €45
- Vehicle without European approval: €165
After the customs application, we will send your paperwork to IMT.
Other IMT Services
IMT also provides a range of other services, including:
- Revalidating a driving licence
- Replacing a driving licence
- Exchanging a foreign driving licence for a Portuguese one
- Requesting a TVDE (individual and remunerated passenger transport in unmarked vehicles via electronic platforms) driver certificate
- Applying for a parking card for persons with disabilities
You can schedule document deliveries for exchanging a foreign license at IMT. They also cater to collective entities like service providers, driving schools, and agencies.
Locations and appointments
IMT offices are usually found in larger cities. You can find the location nearest to you here. Often it is best to make an appointment, and even then you may have to wait for a very long time before it’s your turn. And the person who is helping you may not speak your language (or English).
