Inspection Category B is a specialized inspection required for importing cars into Portugal. Not all inspection centers offer this service, so you need to ensure that the center you choose can perform this inspection.
Why is there an Inspection?
This inspection ensures your car is safe to drive on Portuguese roads and verifies that the car matches the details on paper, such as in the COC document or homologation. For instance, if the engine has been replaced, the inspection center will likely detect it. Any modifications to your car will require additional steps in the import process, but approval is still possible.
You usually don’t need an appointment and can simply show up at the inspection center. However, we recommend calling ahead, especially if you have to travel a distance, to confirm they can accommodate you. It’s also wise to go early in the day to avoid the center closing while you wait.
The inspection involves
- Documentation verification
- Visual observation of car identification elements
- Exterior and detailed visual observation
- Inspection following procedures and regulations
What to bring
- Portuguese homologation (or COC document)
- Filled-in Modelo 9
- Original car registration document
What you will receive once the vehicle passes inspection
- A yellow form (Modelo 112)
- A green form (Modelo 80)
- A stamp on your Modelo 9 form

Many inspection centers only offer regular inspections. When looking for an inspection center for your import, make sure they offer “Inspection Category B”.
